PAPUA - Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of West Papua Province, Taufiqurrakhman, said that the plan to relocate the Class IIB Manokwari Correctional Institution (Lapas) was still constrained by the availability of new land. "Therefore, coordination with the Manokwari Regency Government continues to be improved so that land problems are immediately addressed. I have met with the local government several times. Hopefully we can get land grants from the local government," said Taufiqurrakhman in Manokwari, Antara, Wednesday, January 25. The current condition of the Class IIB Manokwari Prison has exceeded its capacity, so it is necessary to relocate. In addition, prison buildings are no longer suitable to be inhabited and located in the middle of local settlements. "The building is old, adjacent to people's homes. It is prone to security," he said. If the local government realizes the land grant, the construction of a new building for the Manokwari Prison will immediately be proposed to the Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Jakarta. The new prison building should ideally accommodate 1,000 inmates, a fence radius of approximately 20 meters, and is located far from residential areas. This is because the Class IIB Manokwari Prison also accommodates inmates from detention centers or other prisons in West Papua. "Because Manokwari is the provincial capital," he said.
