Kemenkumham: 26 Prisoners Accept Special Remission For Chinese New Year 2023

The Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) said, as many as 26 out of 42 Confucian convicts throughout Indonesia received special remissions for Chinese New Year 2574 Kongzili. "One of them received special remission II (direct free) after receiving a one-month remission," said the Public Relations and Protocol Coordinator of the Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Rika Aprianti in Jakarta, Antara, Sunday, January 22. Rika said that granting remissions is a form of state appreciation to prisoners who have tried and shown better behavior change. Specifically for the 2023 Chinese New Year remission, he said, the most recipients came from West Kalimantan as many as nine inmates, followed by Bangka Belitung, seven inmates and three inmates from Banten Province. The rest came from Central Java, DKI Jakarta, Jambi, East Java, and North Sumatra. The provision of special remissions for Chinese New Year to prisoners has succeeded in saving state expenditures (inmates' food budget) amounting to Rp. 14,790,000. He explained that special remissions for Chinese New Year are given to prisoners who have met the administrative and substantive requirements according to the laws and regulations. It is hoped that the granting of remissions can improve the identity of the inmates. "Giving remissions is not only as a reduction in the criminal period, but is expected to increase the faith and motivation of prisoners to be better," he hoped. Based on the correctional database system as of January 13, 2023, the number of prisoners and detainees in Indonesia is 273,522 people. The details are 226,514 prisoners and 47,008 prisoners. To note, remission is a reduction in the criminal period given to prisoners and children who have met the requirements based on the provisions of the legislation. The rules regarding granting remissions are regulated in Law No. 22 of 2022 concerning Corrections and Government Regulation (PP) No. 32 of 1999 concerning Terms and Procedures for the Implementation of the Rights of Correctional Inmates. The regulation states that prisoners who receive remission have met administrative and substantive requirements in accordance with the provisions, such as good behavior, actively participating in coaching programs, and have shown a decrease in risk levels.
