JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has asked the Provincial Government (Pemrov) of Central Sulawesi (Sulteng) to pay attention to the safety of workers by emphasizing companies to carry out these efforts.

"Investment is important to support development, but it must be included with job safety guarantees for workers or employees," said Komnas HAM Chairman Representative of Central Sulawesi Dedi Askary in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Wednesday, January 18.

Dedi said that occupational safety and health are the basic rights of workers or employees that must be fulfilled by companies and investors.

This, he continued, is regulated and stated firmly in the provisions of the legislation so that all investors must uphold the rules that apply in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia.

"For this reason, local governments need to optimize the implementation of statutory provisions by encouraging investors to ensure work safety," he said, quoted by Antara.

The safety and health of work in addition to being a basic right in employment, he said, is the most important and strategic thing in supporting the target of achieving the production of every company investment activity.

Dedi also asked the Central Sulawesi Provincial Government and the company to make the clash between workers of PT Gunbuster Nickel Indonesia (GNI) in North Morowali Regency a lesson.

"A lesson for the government is to tighten health and occupational safety guarantees in every investment activity and lessons for the GNI to minimize the risk of work accidents," he said.

Regarding the problems that occurred at PT GNI, he explained, Komnas HAM Central Sulawesi asked companies to prioritize tightening the implementation of safety, employee/labor occupational health, fulfilling the basic rights of employees, and fulfilling the safety of facilities according to work safety standards.

Dedi asked PT GNI to involve various competent parties in carrying out a thorough investigation regarding employee demonstrations that resulted in interlaborous chaos at the company.

"Do a thorough investigation in order to clearly open the causes of demonstrations and clashes that occurred. Investigations must involve employment agencies, the government, labor organizations, and law enforcement," he said.

Dedi added that the Central Sulawesi Provincial Government must immediately form an integrated team to investigate work accidents that have resulted in demonstrations that led to clashes at PT GNI.
