BMKG Reminds To Be Alert Of Fissures Due To Earthquake In Cigudeg, Bogor

BOGOR - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the need to be aware of fissures that might occur due to an earthquake 25 kilometers northwest of Bogor City to be precise in Cigudeg District, Bogor Regency, Sunday (15/1) early morning. This gap can cause landslides if not anticipated.

Head of the Data and Information Center Section of the Climatology Station at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hadi Saputra explained the potential for aftershocks to occur on a smaller scale in Cigudeg this morning.

Seeing the weather situation with high rainfall in the Bogor area, it is necessary to check whether there are cracks caused by the earthquake, although there was no serious damage to buildings owned by local residents.

"We must first look at whether there is deformation of the rocks around the epicenter area, if for example there are cracks in the hills, it is dangerous if it gets hit by rain, landslides can occur, it must be checked on the ground," said Hadi as reported by ANTARA, Monday, January 15.

Hadi stated that the BMKG was waiting for a report on the impact of the earthquake that occurred in Cigudeg from the Bogor Regency Government and coordinating whether there would be a field inspection.

"Don't know (when to check), waiting for info from the Bogor Regency BPBD regarding the impact first," said Hadi.

On the other hand, the earthquake, which according to the BMKG report was 25 kilometers northwest of Bogor City, was confirmed by the Chief Executive of the Bogor City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Theofilo Patrocinio Freitas, without any reports of damage or casualties in his area.

According to Theofilo, maybe because the epicenter of the earthquake was still quite far from the city of Bogor, we should be grateful it didn't have any impact.

However, it is known that Cigudeg District, Bogor Regency is an area prone to landslides and floods.

The Bogor Regency Government (Pemkab), West Java, noted that at least 40 families were displaced as a result of their houses being submerged in a flash flood in Cigudeg, Bogor, after the embankment broke at the end of 2021.

Flash floods occurred in Rengasjajar Village at around 18.00 WIB, Monday (9/8/2021), during heavy rain which caused the Cidangder River to overflow causing the embankment to collapse because it was not strong enough to hold back the heavy flow of water.

One year later, at the beginning of 2023 there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 5 in the Cigudeg area, Bogor Regency.
