Gempa Magnitudo 5 Guncang Mamberamo Raya Papua, BMKG: Tinis Bangkalan Takpotensi Tsunami

PAPUA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5 in Mamberamo Raya, Papua Mountains had no potential for a tsunami. "The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of 5.0," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in Jakarta, Antara, Saturday, January 14. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 2.49 degrees south latitude, 138.58 degrees east longitude or precisely located on land 11 kilometers northeast of Mamberamo Tengah, Mamberamo Raya, Papua at a depth of 50 kilometers. After paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocentrum, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake. This happened because of local fault activity in the Sesar Meramo Zone. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a downward movement mechanism (normal fault). The earthquake that occurred at 22:41 WIB had an impact and was felt in the Sarmi area with an intensity scale of III Modified Mercally Intensity (MMI). The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami. As of 23.10 WIB, BMKG's monitor results did not show any aftershock activity. The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified.
