Appreciation For Jokowi Acknowlescing 12 Serious Human Rights Violations, PSI: Tens Of Years Of Closed Eyes State

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) appreciates the attitude of the Joko Widodo (Jokowi) Government which acknowledged that there were 12 cases of gross human rights violations (HAM) in the past in Indonesia.

"This is an extraordinary breakthrough. For decades the country has neglected and closed its eyes, also ignoring the rights of the victims and their families. If we continue to deny, we can fall into the same error hole," said PSI DPP spokesman Furqan AMC in a statement, Thursday, January 12, confiscated by Antara.

According to him, the recognition of cases of gross human rights violations is important to provide provisions in the future so as not to repeat the same actions.

"For future improvements, it must begin with learning from the past and sincerely admitting that there are mistakes. This recognition is a bold step as a great-hearted nation that willing to admit mistakes in the past," said Furqan.

At the time of Mbak Sipon's death, Widji Tukul's wife, a few days ago, Furqan had also asked for attention so that the government would uncover cases of forced disappearance of democracy activists.

"Thank God, President Joko Widodo conveyed the recognition of 12 past gross human rights violations. Hopefully these dark incidents can be a lesson in the school and campus curriculum so that future generations can learn a lot from this mistake," he said.

Previously, President Jokowi stated that the Indonesian government acknowledged gross human rights violations in at least 12 incidents in the past.

This was conveyed by President Jokowi after receiving a report from the Past Non-Judicial Settlement Team for Violation of Human Rights (PPHAM) represented by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 11.

President Jokowi admitted that he had read carefully the PPHAM Team's report which was previously formed based on Presidential Decree Number 17 of 2022.

"With a clear mind and a sincere heart, I as the Head of State of the Republic of Indonesia admit that serious human rights violations have indeed occurred in various events," said Jokowi.

The President also stated that he deeply regretted the occurrence of gross human rights violations in 12 past events.

The 12 incidents included the 1965-1966 incident, the mysterious shooting of 1982-1985, the Talangsari incident in Lampung 1989, the Rumoh Geudong and the Sattis Post in Aceh 1989, the disappearance of people by force 1997-1998, and the May 1998 riots.

Then, the Trisakti and Semanggi I-II 1998-1999 incidents, the 1998-1999 witchcraft shaman murder, the 1999 Aceh KKA Intersection, the 2001-2002 Papua Wasior incident, the 2003 Wamena Papua incident, and the 2003 Jambo Keupok Aceh incident.
