YOGYAKARTA President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received a visit from Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, January 9, 2023. This is the first time Anwar has visited abroad since serving as PM last year. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) invited PM Anwar Ibrahim to tour the Bogor Botanical Gardens in West Java (West Java) using a Buggy car. This was done after the two of them jointly planted Merawan tree seedlings in the backyard of the Bogor Presidential Palace.

2. Jokowi-Anwar Ibrahim Watch Leave LoI Investment Commitment in IKN

During the meeting, PM Anwar Ibrahim and Jokowi also witnessed the handover of Letter of Intent (LoI) of a number of Malaysian businessmen who were interested in investing in the development of the state capital (IKN) of the archipelago.

LoI handover was carried out by the Minister of International Trade and Malaysian Industry Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz to the Head of the Nusantara IKN Authority Bambang Susantono at the Bogor Presidential Palace.

"11 Letter of Intent has been signed by the Malaysian private sector and handed over to the Nusantara IKN Authority, which (among other things) is engaged in electronics, health, waste management, construction, and property," Jokowi said in a joint press statement broadcast on the official YouTube channel of the Presidential Secretariat.

Meanwhile, Anwar said that Malaysia also has an interest in the IKN Nusantara development project, especially in terms of efforts to boost the economy in the Sabah and Serawak regions, which are located on the island of Kalimantan.

"There are also Malaysian interests, especially in Sabah and Serawak, the proximity, the economic interests of the region which are very meaningful," he said.

3. Anwar Ibrahim Express Commitment to Protect Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia

When meeting President Jokowi at the Bogor Palace, Prime Minister, Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim expressed his commitment to provide protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in neighboring countries.

Anwar does not want the labor problem to synchronize the relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia, which has actually been around for a long time.

"So we, God willing, will avoid issues that can be resolved because I want Indonesian-Malaysian relations to be more special," said Anwar.

Jokowi also welcomed Anwar Ibrahim's commitment to providing protection for Indonesian migrant workers. Jokowi hopes that the implementation of the one channel system (OCS) can run well.

I really hope that one channel system for the recruitment and placement of Indonesian migrant workers can really be carried out together. And earlier I repeated my request regarding the importance of community learning center development on the Peninsula to fulfill the educational rights of Indonesian migrant workers," said President Jokowi.

4. Jokowi and Anwar Discussed on Indonesia-Malaysia Border

Jokowi and PM Anwar also discussed the border of the Indonesia-Malaysia region. Both targets the Indonesia-Malaysia land and sea border to be signed in 2023.

"Earlier we discussed and agreed that the Land Border MoU Sebatik segment and the Sinapat segment can be signed this year and also the sea agreement for the region in the Sulawesi sea and in the southern part of the Malacca Strait can also be agreed upon this year," said Jokowi.

5. Indonesia-Malaysia Agrees ASEAN's Strengthening

President Jokowi said that Indonesia and Malaysia had agreed to strengthen the role of ASEAN in the global arena, including its role in making the Indo-Pacific region peaceful, stable and prosperous.

"We (Indonesia-Malaysia) agree to continue to strengthen ASEAN. We agree that ASEAN must be able to play a central role in making the Indo-Pacific region peaceful, prosperous, and stable," said Jokowi, quoting Antara.

Jokowi said that Indonesia and Malaysia also have the same view on Myanmar, where the two countries agreed to urge the Myanmar Military Junta to implement the five consensus points that ASEAN countries had agreed upon.
