YOGYAKARTA - The Semantok Dam was finally inaugurated by President Jokowi on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. The dam is located in Kedungpingit Hamlet, Sambikerep Village, Rejos District, Nganjuk, East Java.

The construction of the Semantok Dam is also included in the National Strategic Program launched by the Government as an effort to maintain water and food, especially in Nganjuk. This dam is also predicted to be the longest dam in Southeast Asia.

Quoted from bpkp.go.id, the Semantok construction project requires approximately 731 hectares of land consisting of 428 hectares for the site of the dam and puddle, 20 hectares of residents' land, 243 hectares of bottled area and quarry, and 39 hectares of relocation land for the affected residents.

This dam has a capacity of 32.67 million m3 of water sourced from the Semantok River. In the future this dam will have a number of benefits such as minimizing drought in a rice field area covering an area of 1,900 hectares (ha). This is possible because of the irrigation network in the dam.

In addition, the benefit of the Semantok Dam is as a river maintenance in the downstream area of the dam which reaches 30 liters/second. In addition, the dam is also used as a raw water provider of 312 liters/second for the surrounding sub-district.

The Semantok Dam is also expected to be able to be used as a tourism destination in East Java which triggers local economic growth.

Dams can also be used as a means of supporting power generation infrastructure such as hydroelectric power plants (PLTA).

The inauguration of the Semantok Dam was carried out by President Jokowi. During the inauguration, he said that the dam was able to irrigate 1,900 hectares of rice fields.

The capacity of this dam is very large, 32.6 million cubic meters with an inundation area of 365 hectares which will irrigate 1,900 hectares of rice fields, explained the President as quoted by Antara.

The dam, which was built since 2017, spent a budget of IDR 2.5 trillion. With this dam, the President hopes that the frequency of harvest on Nganjuk agricultural land and its surroundings can increase.

"If you usually harvest once, you can harvest twice, if you usually harvest twice you can harvest three times. Usually (off) what cannot be planted with rice, for example, can be harvested twice or three times," said the President.

For information, the Semantok Dam is the 30th dam that was successfully inaugurated. The government itself targets approximately 50-60 dams by the end of 2024.
