BMKG Asks Sea Transportation Users In Natuna To Be High Wave Alert 6 Meters

TANJUNGPINANG - The Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Tanjungpinang appealed to sea transportation users in Natuna Waters, Riau Islands, to be aware of high waves of up to six meters.

BMKG Tanjungpinang forecaster Robbi A Anugraha said sea waves in Natuna were influenced by the northern wind entering Indonesian territory. Basically, sea wave height as a result of gusts or wind movement on the surface.

"The cause of the sea wave height in Natuna is because it is the outermost island in the Riau Islands region in the South China Sea (North Indonesia), so it is directly affected by the gusts of the north," he said as reported by Antara from Tanjungpinang, Sunday, December 18.

Robbi added that early warnings were also addressed to sea transportation users in the waters of the Anambas Islands and Bintan Regency. Anambas waters also border the South China Sea.

The sea wave height in Anambas reaches four meters and Bintan is 2.5 meters. This condition, according to him, is quite dangerous for the safety of sea transportation users, especially small and medium-sized ships.

He appealed to the public, especially traditional fishermen and users of sea transportation services to always be vigilant and careful, not to force activities at sea if sea waves are high.

"If it is not possible to go to sea, don't force yourself. Always monitor and pay attention to the current wave height conditions," he said.

Head of the Riau Islands Transportation Service, Junaidi, said that all commercial ships are not allowed to sail if weather conditions are not possible.

"We always coordinate with BMKG to determine whether sea waves allow ships to sail or not," he said.
