JABAR - At least two people died and another person suffered serious injuries at a railroad crossing in the Cirebon area, West Java (West Java).

Public Relations Manager of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Daop 3 Cirebon, Ayep Hanapi, asked residents who take advantage of level crossings not to be careless and vigilant so that similar incidents do not happen again.

"We ask the public to be more vigilant when crossing a level crossing," he said in Cirebon, West Java, Sunday, December 11, as reported by Antara.

Ayep said that on Sunday, December 11, at around 11.23 WIB, there was a traffic accident at a level crossing without a gate, where the Taksaka train, the Gambir-Cirebon relation, was hit by a motorized vehicle with an E-5389-IZ number plate at KM 191+200, Jalan Kerataemaya-Arjawinangun, Cirebon Regency.

According to him, the accident resulted in the death of two people on behalf of Mudakir (65) and Mukrinah (55). Meanwhile, Naila Zilda (7) was seriously injured. The three are located, in Guwa Lor Village, Kaliwedi District, Cirebon Regency.

As a form of effort to increase the safety factor of PT KAI also continues to coordinate with the DJKA of the Ministry of Transportation, and the local government regarding the closure of a number of level crossings.

"From January to December 2022, a total of 18 crossings in the Daop 3 Cirebon area have been closed.

"Currently, local governments are also gradually building flyover facilities (flyovers) or underpasses (terowongan) at a number of points to minimize traffic accidents at level crossings," he said.

Ayep added that accidents at level crossings not only harm road users but also can harm PT KAI. Not infrequently train trips are hampered, damage to railway facilities or infrastructure, to KAI officers who are injured in accidents at level crossings.

To reduce the number of accidents and victims, Ayep continued, his party asked the public to be more traffic disciplined, realize and understand the function of the crossing gate.

Because, the railroad crossing door serves to secure train travel, so as not to be disturbed by other road users such as motorized and human vehicles. This is stated in Government Regulation No 72 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Train Transportation article 110 paragraph 4.

"Railways are prioritized because if an accident occurs, the impacts and losses can be greater, so road users must prioritize train roads," he said.

In addition, Ayep added that railroad crossings are a safety aid for road users, as well as signals and level crossing guard officers.

Meanwhile, the STOP signs' that have been installed, he continued, are the main markers for road users to pay attention to.
