JAKARTA - A number of celebrities and artists are said to support or endorse the Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP) which was just passed into law by the Indonesian House of Representatives on Tuesday, December 6. The support provided through their social media led to the negative public spotlight.

Responding to this, RKUHP Spokesperson Albert Aires admitted that he did not know if there were celebrities or artists who were asked to endorse the new Criminal Code. However, he considered that support should not be a problem.

"I focus only on the legal explanation. But, if that is true, is any legal norm violated," Albert said when contacted by VOI, Thursday, December 8.

While related to problematic articles in the new Criminal Code, Albert said, it is only natural that there is still debate. However, he warned that the law was necessary.

"Even if there is an article that becomes a debate, isn't it a natural thing. Two or three or even a few articles in question are only a few percent of the 624 other articles in the Criminal Code which are important to solve legal problems in our country," he said.

A number of celebrities who uploaded their support for the RKUHP, one of which was YouTuber Edho Zell. From the screenshot of his Instagram shared by netizens, he invited the public not to be consumed by hoax issues circulating related to the law.

"Don't let you be consumed by hoaxes that are circulating. Find out more and understand it with the Indonesian-made Criminal Code Bill," he wrote.

However, the upload has been removed from Edho Zell's social media. Another celebgram that also uploaded an endorsement to the RKUHP was Tissa Sabiani.

Through screenshots of netizens, on their Instagram account, Tissa also uploaded photos with the same caption as Edho Zell. However, the upload has been deleted.

Previously, the DPR approved the RKUHP to be ratified into law. This approval was given through the Plenary Meeting which was held on Tuesday, December 6.

"Can the Criminal Code Bill be approved to be passed into law," said Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad at the DPR Plenary Meeting at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, December 6.

Dasco said all factions had expressed their opinion at level I regarding the RKUHP to be brought to the DPR Plenary Meeting for decision making.
