JAKARTA - Commission III of the DPR RI approved the decision making of the Bill on the Ratification of Agreements between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore concerning the Extradition of Fugitives brought to the Plenary Session of the DPR. The approval was taken at a meeting of Commission III of the DPR with the Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna Laoly, Monday, December 5. Of the 9 factions, all unanimously agreed unless PKS agreed with a note. "To be valid, we ask the forum whether the calm bill for the ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore on the extradition of fugitives can be approved to be continued at the second level of decision-making talks at the nearest plenary session of the DPR RI?" asked Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the DPR Prince Khairul Saleh, as chair of the meeting. "Agreed," replied the meeting participant. "All factions agree, then please the Minister submit his final opinion," added Prince. Menkumham Yasonna Laoly, expressed his gratitude for the approval of all factions in Commission III of the DPR RI. He said the next bill would be brought to level II or Plenary Session of the DPR. "Thank you for the approval of the factions and we represent the president in approving and welcoming and expressing his highest gratitude and appreciation for the completion of the discussion of the Bill on Ratification of Agreements between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore on the extradition of fugitives at first level talks to be continued at level II talks for decision making in the plenary session of the DPR," Yasonna said. Previously, Yasonna said that the Fugitive Extradition Bill was a follow-up to Indonesia's cooperation with Singapore. Agreements were agreed in Bintan, January 25, 2022. He said the purpose of the Fugitive Extradition Bill was to streamline the legal process so that the perpetrators who fled to Singapore could be returned to Indonesia. "The extradition of fugitives is an attempt to repatriate someone suspected or convicted for committing a criminal act in the state area who requested the surrender because he was authorized to try him," Yasonna said. Yasonna explained the importance of making a cooperation agreement because of Singapore. Namely, the intensity of the movement of people from or to Singapore is quite high because of the visa-free policy. "This makes Singapore often the ultimate goal or transit of criminals," he explained. Yasonna hopes that the Fugitive Extradition Bill will soon be passed in order to facilitate the work of law enforcement officials in cracking down on perpetrators hiding in Singapore. "The extradition agreement will make it easier for law enforcement officials to resolve criminal cases that perpetrators in Singapore have committed," he concluded.
