China's New Daily COVID-19 Cases Again Rises, Guangzhou Holds Mass Tests

JAKARTA - New daily cases of COVID-19 infection in China have increased again, with Guangzhou becoming the epicenter of the new mass COVID-19 test.

China reported 9,005 new COVID-19 infections on November 9, of which 1,185 were symptomatic and 7,820 were asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Thursday.

The day before, China reported 8,335 cases the day before, with 1,346 symptomatic and 6,989 asymptomatic infections, which China calculated separately.

The Chinese capital, Beijing, reported 34 symptomatic cases and 61 asymptomatic, compared with 32 symptomatic cases and 48 asymptomatic the previous day, according to local government data.

Meanwhile, Shanghai's financial center reported no symptoms and four asymptomatic cases, compared to zero symptoms and four asymptomatic cases the day before, local health authorities reported.

The southern technology center Shenzhen reported two locally transmitted COVID-19 infections, compared to three days earlier.

Guangzhou, also in the south, reported 125 new locally transmitted cases and 2,430 asymptomatic cases, compared with 91 symptoms and 2,564 asymptomatic cases the day before, authorities said in the city of nearly 19 million people.

However, there were no new deaths, the same as the day before, with a death toll of 5,226.

As of November 9, mainland China had confirmed 267,544 cases with symptoms.

Yesterday, Guangzhou held a COVID-19 test for its citizens, along with the city becoming a new epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in China.

The districts in Guangzhou that were targeted for mass testing this week include Haizhu, which has experienced most cases in the city. The lockdown of the entire district from Saturday to Monday, has been extended to Friday as cases increase.

It is known, while COVID-19 cases in China are small according to global standards, non-stop policy responses and mass testing for large populations have been the norm since 2020.
