BANDUNG - Bandung City Government (Pemkot) conducts river dredging and drainage channels in the middle of the rainy season which is starting to be felt in a number of parts of Indonesia. This effort is to prevent flooding.

Bandung City Regional Secretary Ema Sumarna said the action to anticipate flooding was carried out when the weather in Bandung was not raining.

"Now there is no rain. This should be an opportunity to dredge the river to organize the ditch. Don't wait for the rain," he said in Bandung, West Java (West Java), quoted from Antara, Monday, October 31.

He said the rivers in the city of Bandung needed to be deepened by two to three meters.

In particular, he said, dredging needs to be done in areas that often experience flooding, such as in Gedebage and Rancasari. In addition, he has ordered all ranks of the sub-district and sub-district governments to immediately transport garbage in the river.

According to him, regional apparatus needs to increase sensitivity related to their respective environmental conditions.

He assessed that the higher sedimentation in a number of river flows was caused by mud material carried from upstream of the river.

However, he said, the majority of the upstream river is outside the city of Bandung. "That's why this must be a synergy (with Bandung Regency, ed.), generally flood management, but upstream is also being worked on, so I also ask for a reforestation," he said.

The Bandung City Government has also increased the number of pump machines and added wells at the city border, one of which is in Cibaduyut which is prone to flooding. "He said the problem there and the water could not flow to the district (hilir, ed.), because the toll road was blocked, so the water returned to the community again," he said.
