YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Environment Agency (DLH) has implemented a number of strategies to anticipate the potential for overflowing garbage in temporary waste disposal sites by optimizing the garbage fleet.
This strategy is carried out considering that the Piyungan TPA has a strict schedule in disposing of waste.
"Disposal of garbage to the Piyungan TPA can no longer be done every day but is scheduled every three days, alternated with Sleman and Bantul Regencies," said Head of the Waste Division of the Yogyakarta City Environment Agency (DLH) Ahmad Haryoko in Yogyakarta quoted from Antara, Thursday, October 27.
The schedule, which took effect on Wednesday, was carried out to facilitate waste disposal services because the condition of the Piyungan TPA was getting full. The location for unloading garbage from trucks is getting narrower, coupled with weather conditions that often rain.
With this scheduling, continued Haryoko, what happened in the city of Yogyakarta was the accumulation of waste in temporary waste disposal sites or in waste depots because of its small capacity.
In addition to TPS, waste accumulation is also expected to occur in waste bins in several locations, such as along Jalan Urip Sumoharjo.
“Usually, garbage is taken every day but because it is scheduled every three days, it is possible that the waste in the waste bin will overflow onto the road and potentially cause odor. But, what can we do because the conditions are like this, "he said.
He hopes that the public can understand this condition so that they refrain from throwing garbage into the TPS or depot.
"Incidentally, today is the waste disposal schedule for the city of Yogyakarta, so we really optimize it to be able to reduce waste at TPS and depots by deploying the entire waste fleet," he said.
The Yogyakarta City DLH deployed 42 fleets to transport garbage to the Piyungan TPA with three to four rits of waste disposal per fleet.
"We will also fill it with garbage again so that it can be immediately dispatched to the Piyungan TPA on the next disposal schedule," he said.
Based on information from the manager, continued Haryoko, the schedule for waste disposal at the Piyungan TPA will be carried out until the transitional TPA is operationalized.
Currently, the construction of the transitional TPA which is also at the Piyungan TPA has been completed but there has been no handover to the manager so that it cannot be used.
However, the requirements set for disposing of waste at the transitional TPA are quite difficult to fulfill, namely only receiving organic waste.
“ So far, the waste thrown into Piyungan TPA is residual waste. It hasn't been separated between organic and inorganic. If it has to be separated, then we can't afford it," he said.
He hopes that the requirements for disposing of waste at the transitional TPA can be looser or the same as waste disposal that has been carried out at the Piyungan TPA.
"Both from Yogyakarta City, Sleman and Bantul Regencies that utilize the Piyungan TPA cannot separate the organic and inorganic waste that is disposed of," he said.
The use of transitional TPA, he continued, has also not been able to become a long-term solution for waste management in DIY because it is estimated that its age can only accommodate waste for about nine months.
