JAKARTA - The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) recommends parents to avoid giving paracetamolAMous drugs to children who have fever as a form of vigilance against acute kidney failure.
"The allegation from Gambia, Africa, is that there are dietilen glycol and ethilen glycol in drugAMps. For early vigilance, we first avoid mild drugs while monitoring whether the drug is in Indonesia," said Head of the Central Management of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) Piprim Basarah Yanuarso via Live Instagram IDI, Antara, Tuesday, October 18.
According to Piprim, currently too many antibiotic medicinal products are circulating in the market, including those containing paracetamol. In fact, these products are often an instant path for parents in reducing child fever.
"What is being faced now is the therapeutic drug paracetamol or other cough cold drugs that have a mixture of dietilen glycol and ethilene glycol," he said.
The recommendation is an early alert system that can be applied by parents based on learning from cases of acute kidney failure in Gambia. "IDAI recommends to the Ministry of Health to avoid taking the drug first," he said.
Piprim invites parents to return to conservative treatment methods to reduce fever in children, one of which is by being given sufficient rest and not using antibiotics.
"Use conservative methods first, unless there are comorbidities such as asthma, pneumonia requires serious medicine. If you cough and runny nose because of the weather, just rest, just don't use antibiotics," he said.
Meanwhile, IDAI has collected a total of 192 acute kidney failure cases out of a total of 20 provinces in Indonesia since January until now. The patient composition is mostly toddlers.
DKI Jakarta occupies the highest number of reports reaching 50 cases, then West Java and East Java with 24 cases each, and West Sumatra with 21 cases.
Contacted separately, the Head of the Communication and Public Service Bureau of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said she was still waiting for the results of the team's recommendations and laboratory tests for the cause of acute kidney failure in Indonesia.
"We are still waiting for the team's report and laboratory tests," said Nadia in response to IDAI's recommendations regarding the consumption of paracetamol drugs.
