Sail Tidore 2022 International Shipping Event, Commemorating The Spice Route In Nusantara

YOGYAKARTA - Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Trade, officially launched Sail Tidore 2022 on Tuesday (11/10) at the Ministry of Trade, Jakarta. Sail Tidore is an international shipping event in Indonesian waters which is held every year.

The Sail Tidore 2022 event is the second event since 2009. This event brings international sailors. Zulhas hopes that the Sail Tidore event can push back Indonesia's glory as a spice-producing country that has been famous since 500 years ago.

Sail Tidore 2022 is also expected to be a driver for economic growth, tourism, and accelerated development, especially in the North Maluku (Malut) region. In addition, this event is also a place to establish economic cooperation with European countries such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

When will Sail Tidore 2022 be held?

The international sailing event Sail Tidore 2022 will be held on 24-29 October 2022 in Tidore, North Maluku. Sailors from various countries will come to enliven this event. This annual event will be canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy provides training and assistance to local communities in preparation for the 2022 Sail Tidore event. Menparekraf Sandiaga Uno is optimistic that this event can create 1.1 million jobs. This event is one of the marine tourism favored by President Joko Widodo.

History of Cruise Lines in Tidore

The Tidore region, North Maluku Province, has a long history of trade since the days of the kingdoms in the archipelago. Tidore is one of the old kingdoms in the archipelago.

Tidore is famous as a spice-producing region since ancient times. Spices from Tidore are very well known in the world trade scene. If history is drawn, the Tidore area was a center of trade or economic activity which was quite important in its time.

The waters in Tidore became a spice route that was passed by merchants from all over the country. The Tidore Kingdom had close trade relations with Sumatra, the Sultanate of Aceh, Kudus, Cirebon, Banten, to Pontianak.

In the era of 1521, a sailor from Spain named Sebastian Elcano anchored to Tidore on a voyage called the Magellan Expedition. The Spaniards carried out maritime expeditions that played an important role in 16th-century Europe. This expedition became the first voyage around the world.

Since then, the existence of Tidore waters as a spice route continues to grow and is recognized by the world. Currently, the City of Tidore is a member of the Global Network of Magellan Cities organization.

Maritime Tourism in Tidore

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment said that the Sail Tidore 2022 event is an opportunity to re-promote marine tourism in the country on the international stage.

"Sail Tidore is our opportunity to rebrand marine tourism in the eyes of the world," said Luhut in his remarks on the virtual launching of Sail Tidore 2022 at the Ministry of Trade.

The city of Tidore has been known for a long time for its exotic marine nature. The beauty of marine tourism is a bargaining power for tourists, both domestic and foreign.

Tourists can dive and explore the Tidore Sea which has the beauty of coral reefs and their biota. In addition, Tidore marine tourism also offers historical value in the form of maritime archeological traces such as shipwrecks on the seabed.

That is the schedule for the Sail Tidore 2022 event and its bargaining power for domestic and foreign tourists. This event is expected to compete with Sail Sabang 2017 which is able to invite the presence of 20,000 local visitors and 3,000 foreign tourists.
