JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) as of Saturday at 06.59 WIB detected 53 aftershocks after an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 that occurred at 02.28 WIB in the North Tapanuli area, North Sumatra.
"As of 06.59 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed 53 aftershocks," said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati when delivering a press statement via the BMKG YouTube channel, quoted from Antara, Saturday, October 1.
He said the series of aftershocks that occurred in North Tapanuli had a magnitude ranging from 2.0 to 5.1.
After an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 at 02.28 WIB centered at coordinates 2.13 degrees North Latitude (LU) and 98.89 degrees East Longitude (BT) or approximately 15 kilometers northwest of North Tapanuli, according to BMKG there was an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.1 at 02.50 WIB.
The earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers at coordinates 2.05 degrees LU and 98.99 degrees east longitude.
The next aftershock occurred at 03.37 WIB. The earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 was at a depth of 10 kilometers at coordinates 2.03 degrees LU and 98.97 degrees east longitude.
The series of earthquakes that occurred in North Tapanuli caused moderate to strong vibrations for three to five seconds in North Tapanuli, Humbang Hasundutan, Toba, Central Tapanuli, North Labuhan Batu and Medan City.
According to a report received by the Operations Control Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the earthquake caused several residents to be injured. In addition, one resident was reported to have died when the earthquake occurred.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) together with other relevant agencies are still recording the impact of the earthquake in the North Tapanuli area and its surroundings.
