JAKARTA - Nahdatul Ulama (NU) asked the public not to be provoked and affected by incitement thrown by irresponsible people.

This was conveyed by the Chairman of the Nahdatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board Robikin Emhas responding to a video of a person making a call to prayer while holding a sword, which went viral on social media.

"Don't be influenced by incitement, let alone provoked. Religion clearly prohibits division and tells us to unite and bring peace in the midst of people's lives," Robikin said as quoted in his written statement to journalists, Monday, November 30.

He invited the community to strengthen tolerance and mutual respect. Robikin said that as an independent country, Indonesia should be able to interpret jihad as an effort to realize national ideals.

"What is it? Realizing world peace, educating the nation's life, prospering the citizens' economy and creating a just and civilized life order," he said.

"Therefore, in the midst of a pluralistic life like in Indonesia, we must strengthen tolerance and respect for each other and between followers of a religion, ethnicity, culture, and others," added Robikin.

Previously, viral videos of people doing the call to prayer while holding swords were busy on social media. It is not certain where this incident happened. It's just that, the video shows a person who is calling to prayer with several people behind him.

Another video also includes a call to prayer by shouting hayya alal jihad, which means let's do jihad. Meanwhile, the person behind replied to the cry of jihad by clenching his fists.

Karo Penmas, Police Public Relations Division, Brigadier General Awi Setiyono, admitted that he did not know the scene of the incident. It's just that, his party will conduct an investigation into this incident.

"This is still under investigation," said Awi when he was confirmed about this incident at his office, Jakarta, Monday, November 30.
