JAKARTA - Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) attacked militant targets in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq with missiles and drones, state news agency IRNA reported Wednesday.

A senior member of Komala, an opposition party Kurdi Iran, told Reuters several of their offices were attacked on Wednesday morning. He acknowledged there were casualties and material damage, but had no details.

Tehran blamed Iran's armed dissident Kurdish for involvement in riots in the country, particularly in the northwest, where most of Iran's 10 million people live.

Revolutionary Guards said after the attack, they would continue to target so-called terrorists in the region.

"This operation will continue with our full determination until the threat is successfully eradicated, the bases of terrorist groups are dismantled, the Kurdish regional authorities bear their obligations and responsibilities," Revolutionary Guards said in a statement read on state TV.

Meanwhile, the Patriotics Association of Kurdistan, one of the two dominant parties in northern Iraq, condemned the bombing of Iran in Iraq's Kurdistan region, the Iraqi news agency said.

The attack appears to be a response to ongoing protests in Iran over the death of a 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdi woman, Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the country's moral police.

Protests have spread across at least 46 cities, towns and villages in Iran, including the capital Tehran. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Iran on Wednesday morning to refrain from using "unnecessary or disproportionate forces" against protesters.
