"For the 11 students who were detained by the Ternate Police during the demonstration against wearing the fuel price have been returned for coaching on their respective campuses," said Ternate Police Chief AKBP Andik Purnomo Sigit after a meeting with students and student representatives from campus as well as representatives from the city government at the Ternate Police Headquarters, Antara, Tuesday, September 20.
The number of students detained was 15 people and came from a combination of various campuses. However, 11 of them will be repatriated, while the remaining four are still being secured for further examination.
"We have arrested 11 students and four are still investigating because of their connection with the throwing during the action," said the Police Chief.
The meeting discussed the rules in expressing aspirations and opinions in public that must be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.
"We urge younger students to understand more about the rules for conveying aspirations in public as well as violations, then vulnerability and what should be like. That's what we talked about earlier," said Andik.
In addition, during the meeting, a number of students also expressed opinions and input regarding the role of the city and provincial governments in responding to the increase in fuel prices.
"We also provide input to each other so that we are more perfect and we have accommodated the demands of students and we convey them to the government who has the authority," said Andik
Meanwhile, Deputy Dean III of Khairun University Ternate Dr. Zainuddin Abdullah who was present at the meeting said the aspirations of students were a function of control over the government. However, these aspirations should be conveyed in an orderly manner and not easily provoked so that they do not harm all parties.
"In conveying this aspiration is a function of control of the government, but there are rules submitted so that friction does not occur," he said.
With the incident in front of the FKIP, Khair University (Unkhair) Ternate, his party will still coordinate and communicate with campus leaders to get certainty.
"There are still four students who have been arrested and two of them are students from Unkhair," he said.
The demonstration that led to a riot in front of the FKIP Unkhair campus on Monday (19/9) was a combination of students from several universities in Ternate.
Besides Unkhair, the demonstration which also involved students from North Maluku Muhammadiyah University, Stikip Kieraha and IAIN urged the government to immediately lower the price of subsidized fuel.
