JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) hopes that the Government will involve industry players in formulating derivative rules for the Personal Data Protection Bill (RUU PDP) after it is ratified.

This was conveyed by the Deputy Head of the Digital Economic Ecosystem Agency for Public Policy, Zacky Zainal Husein, in a public discussion themed "Industri Preparedness Ahead of the Ratification of the PDP Bill" at hotels in the Central Jakarta area, Friday 9 September.

"We hope that the Government will continue to prioritize discussions with various stakeholders when making derivative rules, especially business actors, so that this privacy legislation can be implemented and encourage sustainability and an important digital transformation rate for post-pandemic economic recovery," said Zacky.

Digital business actors, continued Zacky, need time to build internal readiness.

He said, based on research from the Indonesia Services Dialogue (ISD) Council on nearly 65 companies in the digital economy industry, the majority of digital companies or 81.3 percent do not yet have a Data Protection Officer (DPO).

Furthermore, he said that DPO is a mandate of the PDP Bill to data controllers to oversee the governance of personal data processing in an agency.

In addition, Zacky continued, 67.2 percent of companies feel that they have not been able to fulfill the provisions for the period of fulfillment of the rights of personal data owners according to the PDP Bill, which is for two years for the adjustment period, if they receive a very high volume of application at one certain time.

According to him, the digital economy industry welcomes the rules in the PDP Bill, which is only one step away from being passed into law.

"We believe that with this regulation, the Indonesian people can be closer to having regulations that guarantee the security of personal data. Rules can also increase consumer literacy on the privacy and security of the digital economy ecosystem," said Zacky.

Previously, based on an Antara report, Commission I of the DPR and the Government finally approved the PDP Bill to be discussed further to the Plenary Session or discussion at level II on Wednesday 7 September.

Symbolically, the approval was realized by the signing of the PDP Bill and the explanations, both by representatives of the factions in Commission I of the DPR and representatives of the government.
