JEMBER - Jember Police Investigators have named MR (16) as a suspect in the case of student abuse that caused the victim to die at one of the State Vocational High Schools (SMKN) in Jember Regency, East Java.
"The perpetrator is charged with Article 80 paragraph 3 of Law No. 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection with a maximum threat of 10 years in prison," said Jember Police Chief AKBP Hery Purnomo during a press conference at the Jember Police Headquarters, reported by ANTARA, Friday, August 26.
A student of SMKN class X with the initials MR (16) kicked his friend with the initials RP (16) until he fell and fainted on Tuesday (23/8).
The victim was then assisted by friends and was taken to the School Health Unit (UKS) and finally referred to the nearest puskesmas, but the victim was declared dead.
"The perpetrator tried to find the victim since this morning and met in front of the victim's class, then the victim explained the misunderstanding and apologized, but because the perpetrator was in an emotional state, he ended up kicking the victim once until he fainted," he said.
The victim's friend and the perpetrator took him to the School Health Unit (UKS), but the person concerned was still unconscious, so he was taken to the nearest puskesmas and declared dead by the medical staff at the puskesmas.
"The perpetrator kicked the victim because the motive was jealousy, that the perpetrator felt that his pride was being trampled on considering his girlfriend was asked to go on a date by the victim. This was evidenced from the WhatsApp chat sent by the victim to the perpetrator's boyfriend," he said.
The police confiscated a number of evidences in the form of the victim's mobile phone which contained a private chat with the perpetrator's boyfriend, then the clothes used by the perpetrator and the victim during the persecution at school.
"The suspect is detained at the Jember Police Headquarters, but separated from adult detainees. We will immediately process it by completing the file so that the perpetrators can get legal certainty in the case," he said.
Hery said the perpetrators were still children, so the investigators involved several parties, namely the Office of Women's Empowerment for Child Protection and Family Planning (DP3AKB), the perpetrator's parents and teachers, and parties who accompanied the perpetrator during the investigation process.
"We are also coordinating with the Correctional Center (Bapas), involving psychologists to provide counseling to perpetrators regarding the psychological condition of the perpetrators because they are still children, and involving child observers," he said.
