MANOKWARI - Acting Governor of West Papua Paulus Waterpauw hopes that the people of Sorong City, Sorong Regency, and Maybrat Regency will accept the acting regional head according to the decision of the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian.

Paulus Waterpauw said the provincial government only proposed three names of officials in each region whose terms of office for the regent and mayor had expired.

"I think the public will just follow it, this is not something that can be discussed whether it is accepted or not, because everything is the decision of the Minister of Home Affairs and ASN who have the mandate to carry it out," said Waterpauw, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, August 19.

Three regional heads in West Papua province, namely Sorong City, Sorong Regency, and Maybrat will end their terms of office on August 22, 2022.

The three regions will be filled with acting regional heads to run the wheels of government until the simultaneous regional head election democratic party on November 29, 2024.

He explained, for the positions of regents and mayors, at least they occupy echelon 2 positions or high pratama positions in the provincial government, so that not everyone is included in these criteria.

"There should be no excessive resistance which will eventually stall development in these three areas," he hoped.

Until now, Waterpauw admitted that he had not received a decree from the Minister of Home Affairs regarding the names of the acting regents and mayors in the three regions.

"We are only proposing, until now we do not know who the Minister of Home Affairs' decision falls on. Because there is a selection mechanism carried out by the Ministry of Home Affairs," he explained.

According to the mechanism, the appointment of the acting regional head by the Minister of Home Affairs after receiving the proposal of three names from the Chair of the Regency and City DPRD, as well as three more names from the West Papua Provincial Government signed by the Governor.
