Bus With Dozens Of Students Stumbled While Traveling In Malang

MALANG - The bus carrying dozens of students from Madrasah Sanawiah Annur Sawahan, Turen, crashed into a ravine in Plandi Village, Wonosari, Malang Regency, East Java.

Head of the Wonosari Polres Malang Police Iptu Anwari Sidiq said the bus carrying a group of 28 students and two teachers fell into a ravine approximately 3 meters high.

"There were 31 people on the bus, consisting of 28 students, two teachers and the driver," said Sidiq as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, August 13.

As a result of the incident, said Sidiq, there were two students who had to get treatment from the nearest health facility. A student named Karomatun Nisa sprained his waist and received treatment at the Ngajum Health Center.

Another student, he continued, named Billy, suffered abrasions from being hit by broken glass. Meanwhile, dozens of students and other passengers were reported to have survived the incident.

"The other passengers are safe," said Sidiq.

It is suspected that the bus carrying the group of students fell due to the bus driver not being able to control the steering wheel when going uphill and turning. At that time the bus was unable to go uphill and went backwards.

"When you step on the gas, instead of going uphill, you go backwards. Incidentally, apart from the steep road, the condition is also slippery due to the rain," he said.

As a result of not being able to climb, the bus finally backed down and rolled onto a cliff close to the residents' plantations.

The bus evacuation plan, he said, would be carried out tomorrow with heavy equipment. The group plans to travel to Umbulan Tanaka, Bangelan Village, Wonosari District.
