JAKARTA - China said the United States could increase its military deployment in the Taiwan Strait amid regional tensions.

This was conveyed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi referring to the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan last week.

"Currently, the situation in the Taiwan Strait is still volatile. We will be wary of the US taking advantage of the cross-strait situation to increase military deployments and try to create a bigger crisis," he explained as quoted by OANA-Anadolu via Antara, Friday, August 12.

He accused Washington of three grave mistakes including grossly interfering in China's internal affairs, condoning and supporting Taiwan's independence forces and deliberately undermining peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2 and 3, 2022, although Beijing had warned that the island was a "breakaway province" and that her visit would violate the country's One China Policy.

Soon after Pelosi left Taipei, Beijing launched a massive military exercise on Aug. 4 that ended last Wednesday. Beijing also sanctioned Pelosi and her close family for the trip, ruled out military dialogue with the US and suspended cooperation on climate change, in addition to six other "retaliatory measures".

"Pelosi's deviation is sickening, not only a blatant and senseless provocation, but also a political joke that is doomed to fail," Wang said in a statement released by China's Foreign Ministry on Friday.

Beijing reiterated its policy of using force to unite Taiwan with mainland China, but said the peace process would be a top priority to achieve the goal.

Wang praised international support for the One China Policy which was reaffirmed by many countries after Pelosi's trip to Taiwan.

"The steps taken by China also safeguard the basic norms of international relations and international justice," he said.

"It is not China that is changing the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, but the United States, which is trying to 'use Taiwan to control China'," he said, continuing.

Wang also defended China's "countermeasures", saying it was done "precisely to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait and regional stability."

He said the principle of non-interference in internal affairs is the "golden rule" for relations between countries and is a "magic weapon" for developing countries.
