SIDOARJO - The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Sidoarjo Police, East Java, arrested a dozen suspects in the beatings between martial arts schools in Sidoarjo Regency, East Java.

Sidoarjo Police Chief Kombes Kusumo Wahyu Bintoro said the incident occurred on Sunday (7/8) night in two locations, the first on Jalan Raya Ponti and the second in the Mpu Tantular Museum area.

The Sidoarjo Police Chief said that at the first location the victim of the beating was ANF, a resident of Candi, Sidoarjo, who was closing an angkringan shop, a group of unidentified youths from the KS martial arts college rode 10 motorbikes together.

“Some of them approached the ANF victim because they were considered to be a member of the PSHT silat college from the shirt they were wearing and immediately beat the victim. Some use bare hands, a ruyung and a piece of bamboo," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, August 11.

From the beating at the first location, the ANF victim suffered injuries to his right temple, right arm and back. A moment later, information circulated on social media that a PSHT member was attacked by a KS college in the Ponti area.

At the location of this incident, he said, a number of youths suspected of being from the KS college who ganged up on ANF were in a coffee shop around the Mpu Tantular Museum, namely FAP, residents of Candi, Sidoarjo, and FDS, residents of Sukodono, Sidoarjo.

FAP and FDS were then attacked by eight youths from PSHT and PSHW, although from the police investigation, the victims of FAP and FDS were members of PSHT.

The FAP victim suffered bruises on his face and a tear on his left leg from a sharp weapon. Meanwhile, the FDS victim suffered injuries to the back of his head and he fainted at the scene.

“We arrested eight youths at the second location and we arrested four youths at the first location. All of them have been named as suspects, and four of them are minors. The motive is the result of a feud between silat schools," he said

The suspects were charged with Article 80 paragraph (1) of the Republic of Indonesia Law no. 35 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection with the threat of imprisonment for 3 years and 6 months, Article 170 of the Criminal Code for seven years, Article 351 Jo. Article 55 of the Criminal Code carries a sentence of 2 years and 8 months in prison.

"Then the suspects who are proven to be carrying and using sharp weapons are subject to a 10-year prison sentence, as stated in Article 2 paragraph (1) of the Emergency Law No. 12 of 1951," he said.

The Sidoarjo Police will summon each silat college, school, parents and the RT/RW where all those involved live.

"So, don't let an incident like this happen again," he said.
