Why Was Bengkulu Made Basarnas A Priority Area For Disaster Relief?

JAKARTA - Head of Basarnas, Marshal Madya TNI, Henri Alfiandi, said Bengkulu was included in the priority area for disaster relief on the island of Sumatra.

"Besides Bengkulu Province, the areas that are prioritized for disaster in Sumatra are Nias and Padang," said Hendri at the Bengkulu Basarnas Office, Thursday, August 11.

He said, Bengkulu's geographical situation has the potential for marine accidents because it is directly facing the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, the Head of Basarnas said Bengkulu is also prone to earthquakes, tsunamis and with the mountainous area it is also prone to landslides and fallen trees. He asked all Basarnas personnel in Bengkulu Province to always be alert and prepared in the face of disasters in the future.

He said that his visit to Bengkulu Province was to see as well as check the availability and completeness of the Basarnas personnel equipment in dealing with disasters. further said that his party would propose additional equipment for the Basarnas team in Bengkulu Province, namely ships that have the ability to penetrate waves as high as five meters.
