YOGYAKARTA - The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, has asked for a firm action against a student who was forced to wear a headscarf against a student at SMA Negeri 1 Banguntapan, Bantul Regency.

"There must be action, I don't want such violations to be silenced," said Sultan HB X at the Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, August 4.

Sultan said that forcing students to wear headscarves in public schools violated the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture (Permendikbud) Number 45 of 2014 which must not impose or prohibit school uniforms with special religious clothing models.

Therefore, he explained, if the forced use of headscarves against students occurs, then the principal and the teachers suspected of being involved must be dealt with.

The Sultan did not agree with the policy which gave students the choice to change schools after the incident.

"It should be the teacher or the principal who is forcing it. This is my opinion, let the team try to see it, even if the child sacrificed was told to move, that's not where the problem is, it's the school's fault. So action must be taken," he said.

According to him, the act of forcing the use of religious attributes in public schools should be avoided to maintain diversity.

"Yes, there are regulations, you can't force them," he said.

The assessment of school accreditation, he said, could not be used as a justification for forcing students to wear headscarves. "Yeah, nothing to do with it," he said.

Previously, the DIY Education, Youth and Sports Office (Disdikpora) on Monday (1/8) questioned the school principal, counseling guidance (BK) teacher, religious teacher, and homeroom teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Banguntapan regarding allegations of being forced to wear a headscarf against one of the students. Islamic student class X.

According to the Head of Disdikpora DIY Didik Wardaya, if the results of the investigation prove that the school has committed a violation, the DIY Regional Personnel Agency (BKD) will impose sanctions.

"We will see the sanctions from PP Number 94 of 2021 concerning Discipline for Civil Servants. Well, there we will see how far the level of violations he has committed if proven," said Didik.
