JAKARTA - Member of Commission I DPR Nurul Arifin supports the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) blocking applications that do not register with the state. Cross-border applications not only have the potential to take advantage of people's personal data, but also cause state losses.

"We can understand the reason. This is one of the efforts to protect personal data from the public and avoid loss to the state," said Nurul Arifin, Monday, August 1.

Nurul assessed that the government has an obligation to protect the personal data of its citizens. According to him, this policy is also a manifestation of the state's presence in protecting the community. "There may be positive and negative impacts, but I think there are more positive impacts," he explained. This is because so far many commercial platforms that are cross-border operate freely without registering as a PSE. For example, said Nurul, when fraud occurs on Instagram, the government will find it difficult to take action directly because it has to go through international applications.

However, the problem is that these applications are large applications used such as Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, or TikTok.

"As a user, of course you will feel safe, because the application used is monitored by the government," he said.

On the other hand, Nurul stated that what the Kemenkominfo did could be an opportunity and benefit for the nation's children.

"Especially for start-ups to develop applications as an alternative," said Nurul. Previously, the Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G. Plate said the Ministry of Communication and Informatics' decision to block a number of sites and applications was a form of law enforcement in Indonesia.

"The government's job is to enforce laws and regulations in Indonesia. The law mandates that all PSEs operating in the country, both local and global PSEs, need to register," Johnny said at the KPU, Monday, August 1.

"The opportunity for registration has been given for quite a long time, approximately one year," he continued.
