JAKARTA - The roof of SDN Rowotengah 03 Elementary School in Rowotengah Village, Jember Regency, East Java, which is an old building, collapsed after heavy rain, but there were no fatalities in the incident.

"We have received reports related to the collapse of the roof of a classroom at SDN Rowotengah 03, Sumberbaru District on Wednesday November 11," said the Head of the Jember Regency Education Office, Edy Budi Susilo, in Jember, as reported by Antara, Thursday, November 12.

According to him, the roof of the classroom collapsed after the wind accompanied by heavy rain flushed Sumberbaru Subdistrict, so that the old building had the potential to collapse.

"The school building was built in 1985 and has seven classrooms with 172 students (six study groups), so the building is old," he said.

The collapsing of the building had an impact on the collapsed walls of the library room next to the classroom, so that the library room was no longer occupied.

He explained that the Education Office had asked the principal to work together to clean up the rubble of the roof of the building and set a boundary so that no one could approach the collapsed classroom.

"We will try to propose the construction of classrooms again in the 2021 APBD and hopefully this can be realized," he said.

Based on data compiled by Antara, classrooms in several schools in Jember collapsed, such as in SMP Negeri 5 Silo which collapsed due to being hit by flash floods on October 19, 2020, then the SDN Klompangan room, Ajung District collapsed on May 29, 2020.

Meanwhile, based on data from the Jember Education Office in 2019, there were a total of 850 elementary school classrooms that were severely damaged spread across 361 public and private SD institutions, but some of them have been allocated for repair.
