KPK Calls Mardani H. Maming's Corruption Has Wide Impacts Including Environmental Damage

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) says that corruption in the natural resources sector has a broad impact. In addition to causing state losses, this rasuah practice causes environmental damage.

This was conveyed by the Deputy Chair of the KPK, Alexander Marwata, after naming former Tanah Bumbu Regent Mardani H. Maming as a suspect in the alleged bribery of mining business permits. He was announced as a suspect on Thursday, June 28.

"Corruption in the natural resources sector has a high domino and social impact. Because it does not only result in state or national economic losses, but also environmental damage," Alexander said as quoted by the Indonesian KPK YouTube, Friday, July 29.

KPK hopes that this kind of incident will not happen again. Moreover, natural resources are state assets that are needed by the wider community.

Not only that, the practice of bribery like Mardani's is the starting point for corruption. "And usually it is one of the modes of corruption that is prone to occur in various public service sectors," he said.

As previously reported, Mardani Maming was detained for the first 20 days after wearing an orange vest. He was named a suspect for allegedly receiving Rp104.3 billion in cash.

Not only that, he also created a fictitious company, namely PT Angsana Terminal Utama (ATU), which monopolized the management of ports that support mining operational activities. The composition of the board of directors and shareholders is still affiliated and managed by his family.

As a result of his actions, Mardani was then suspected of violating Article 12 letter a or Article 12 letter b or Article 11 of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 31 of 1999 concerning Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption as amended by Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 20 of 2001 concerning Amendments to Law -Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) to 1 of the Criminal Code.
