Wantannas: National Security Threats Are No Longer Territory But Humans

JAKARTA - Secretary General of the National Defense Council (Sesjen Wantannas) Vice Admiral TNI Harjo Susmoro said that the concept of national security today is no longer only concerned with regional threats, but also includes security threats to humans.

"The context of national security in all countries in the world is no longer a matter of state security, but already includes human security," said Harjo during the pre-trial agenda for finalizing the draft of strategic documents related to national security at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Jakarta, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 26.

He said that the dynamics of the times have made threats more complex and multidimensional, resulting in a paradigm shift in the concept of national defense itself, which emphasizes human security.

Harjo explained that there are at least eight aspects of security in life that are the responsibility of the president, therefore the president occupies the seat as Chair of the Wantannas.

"He must ensure ideological security, political security, economic security, socio-cultural security, and security in the context of defense and security itself, as well as the security of natural resources, human demographic security, and geographic security of the region," he said.

To address this multidimensional threat, said Harjo, it cannot be faced by only one dimension or institution, but requires collaboration with all ministries and institutions that are members of the Wantannas.

"Human security cannot be handled partially by certain institutions but must be done together," said Harjo.

That's where, Harjo continued, the position of Wantannas became very strategic because the Secretariat General of Wantannas was tasked with making strategic plans for the president to deal with issues that disrupt national stability.

In the pre-trial agenda held this Tuesday, the Secretariat General of Wantannas made improvements to the draft national security strategic document involving representatives of ministries and institutions.

There are four recommendations in improving the manuscript which will be submitted to President Joko Widodo to later become a policy draft, namely related to handling the circular economy, extreme poverty, food loss and waste problems, and strengthening Pancasila democracy which is also related to the implementation of elections and Simultaneous elections in 2024.
