Having A Great Gait In Peace, Timor Leste Nominates NU-Muhammadiyah To Win Nobel Peace Prize

JAKARTA - The President of Timor Leste, José Ramos Horta, has nominated Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah as candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. He considered that the two organizations played an important role in promoting peace.

"These two organizations are very deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. I have seen that NU and Muhammadiyah have always played a very important role in promoting peace," said Ramos Horta when giving a press statement after a friendly visit at the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Building, Jakarta, Between, Wednesday, July 20.

PBNU General Chair KH Yahya Cholil Staquf appreciated the nomination plan. It is an honor as well as an extraordinary moment for NU as the largest Islamic organization in the world.

Previously, in 2021, said Gus Yahya, the familiar greeting of KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, President Ramos Horta had nominated NU to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

"As we know before that President Ramos Horta has nominated NU for the Nobel Peace Prize last year and he wants to nominate him again. This is an honor for all of us," he said.

In addition, Gus Yahya continued, President Ramos Horta also nominated PBNU to join the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and become a candidate for the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is an independent global award that recognizes individuals or organizations that make major contributions to human progress and peaceful living.

President Ramos Horta and his entourage arrived at the PBNU Building at around 09.05 WIB. During his visit, which was a friendly visit between Timor Leste and PBNU, Horta was greeted directly by Gus Yahya and PBNU Secretary General Saifullah Yusuf. Next, they entered the PBNU Building to hold a closed meeting.

During the closed-door meeting, several things were discussed, such as the plan for cooperation between Timor Leste and PBNU to organize religious and humanitarian activities. In addition, PBNU also invited Timor Lester to attend the Religion of Twenty (G20) meeting in Bali on November 2 and 3.

Muhammadiyah Supports Timor Leste to become ASEAN Member

Separately, Head of Muhammadiyah Central Executive Haedar Nasir expressed support for Timor Leste to become a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"We, Muhammadiyah, support Timor Leste to become a member of ASEAN," said Haedar Nasir after receiving a visit from Timor Leste President Jose Ramos Horta today.

Haedar Nashir also expressed his gratitude to Horta for proposing the Islamic organization Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. "The President of Timor Leste, Ramos Horta, is one of the figures who supported us (Muhammadiyah) and NU (Nadhlatul Ulama) to win the Nobel Peace Prize," he said.

On that occasion, the two sides also discussed cooperation in the fields of education, health and in humanitarian roles.

"This is a view where President Ramos Horta also pays attention to issues of peace and humanity at the global level," he said.
