Lack Of Supervision On KRL Commuter Line Trains, Observer: Transport Operators Are Not Firm

JAKARTA - Two more cases of sexual harassment occurred on the Commuter Line electric train (KRL) in the South Jakarta and East Jakarta areas.

The incident of sexual harassment against the first passenger occurred in the KRL series No. 4264 relation Jakarta Kota - Bogor area of Pasar Minggu Station, South Jakarta on Friday, July 15, yesterday.

The perpetrators of the harassment were secured by Pasar Minggu station officers to the Pasar Minggu Police for further processing.

Then on Saturday, July 16, another act of sexual harassment occurred in the KRL series crossing Duri Station - Jatinegara Station in the Jatinegara Station area, East Jakarta, Saturday 16 July.

The harassment was also recorded by the passenger's amateur camera. The harassment was carried out on a passenger who was fast asleep on the KRL. Furthermore, the perpetrators of sexual harassment got off at Jatinegara Station, East Jakarta and escaped arrest.

Transportation observer Azas Tigor Nainggolan said that the prevalence of sexual harassment in public transportation was very frightening. The lack of supervision on the train is also a factor in sexual harassment.

"This situation shows that there is no deterrent effect from the perpetrators, because there is no firm and consistent enforcement by the security forces," said Azas Tigor when confirmed by VOI, Monday, July 18.

He asked the government and public transportation operators to create a security system so that their services are safe, comfortable and free from acts of sexual abuse against children and adults.

"The manager of the Jabodetabek KRL, namely PT KCI, must help the victim by reporting the perpetrator to the police," he said.

He also asked the police to carry out further investigations by asking for information from officers at Pasar Minggu Station.

"To prevent acts of sexual harassment on public transportation, operators or managers of public transportation, the police and other law enforcement officers work together to protect and enforce the law firmly. Enforcement is needed to prevent reoccurrence and build protection for public transportation users," he said.

Previously, the attempted harassment that occurred on the Jakarta Kota-Bogor electric rail train went viral on social media. In the video footage, the perpetrator is seen standing in front of the train door. He was wearing a white shirt and a red hat.

Not long after, the man approached the female passenger who was sitting while sleeping. He then tried to open his pants.

Luckily, the woman woke up. So, the perpetrator gave up his intention.

Currently, the perpetrator has been arrested and prosecuted. Manager of External Relations & Corporate Image Care of KAI Commuter Leza Arlan said that from the information obtained, the harassment took place on Friday, July 15.
