JAKARTA - Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, explained the reason for his party to make arrangements for the separation of male and female seats in public transportation or public transportation in Jakarta.

The plan to separate the seats for public transportation passengers of different sexes emerged after the case of sexual harassment on an angkot majoring in M-44 on the Tebet-Kuningan route which went viral some time ago.

Syafrin said the separation of passenger seats was intended to prevent cases of sexual harassment in public transportation from reoccurring.

"With the sexual harassment that occurs in angkot, we must take mitigation measures, so that similar incidents can be minimized, even eliminated. Thus, there will be physical separation (between men and women) and no longer mixing," said Syafrin at Balai City of DKI Jakarta, Monday, July 11th.

Syafrin explained, later male passengers will sit in the right row of seats with a capacity of six people and female passengers will sit on the left with a capacity of four people.

Currently, the DKI Dishub is compiling technical instructions regarding the segregation of seats for passengers of different sexes in angkot. Later, this technical guideline will be disseminated to all angkot and microtrans operators, whether they are members of JakLingko or not.

"This regulation applies to all angkot starting this week. The operational guidelines (implementation instructions) are being prepared. After the operational guidelines are published, we will disseminate them to operators and staff to implement them by the driver," explained Syafrin.

Syafrin asked angkot drivers to support this policy of segregation of seats. Because, he said, the plan is an obligation that must be implemented.

"We hope that the driver will easily supervise because there is already a mirror in the middle. So, if there is a suspicious action, he (the driver) can immediately stop the vehicle and report (the harassment act) to the ranks or officers close to the route service," added Syafrin.
