Announce Self-Resignation, Boris Johnson: The Party Wants A New Leader, Because That's The New Prime Minister

JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned from his position, remaining to his post until a new leader is elected, in his announcement on Downing Street 10, Thursday.

Boris Johnson stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday but will continue to serve as prime minister until his successor is elected, following an avalanche of resignations in his cabinet eroding his authority and crippling the British government.

"Now it is clear the parliamentary Conservative Party's desire is that there must be a new leader of the party and therefore a new prime minister," he said outside the UK PM's official residence, citing The Washington Post July 7

"I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will, until a new leader exists," he continued. That process could take at least six weeks or longer. The schedule will be announced next week.

On that occasion, he paid tribute to his wife, Carrie, who was watching his speech with their little daughter in his arms.

"I know there are a lot of people who are relieved, and maybe not a few will also be disappointed. I want you to know how sad I am because I have to give up the best job in the world."

There will be no general election. On the other hand, the new prime minister will be elected in the vote for Conservative Party members, who will remain in power.

While it is not uncommon in British politics for a prime minister to remain in office until their replacement elections, some lawmakers and party grandees warn, Johnson tarnishes the party and is too damaged to stay in office during the summer.
