JAKARTA - Dozens of houses in Hadakamali Village, Wulla Waijelu District, East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province were flooded. As many as 30 affected residents were forced to flee to the Gospel Tabernacle Church.

The flood was caused by the overflowing of the Lainkode River since the area was hit by heavy rains on Wednesday morning yesterday.

"Around 50 houses in Wulla Waijelu Sub-district were flooded, most of them were in Hadakamali Village due to overflowing floodwaters from the Lainkode River in the early hours of Wednesday," said Wulla Waijelu Sub-district Head Markus Dakumanungu when contacted from Kupang, Antara, Thursday, June 30.

Heavy rains that occurred on Wednesday 2022 resulted in the Lainunjuk River overflowing and submerging the houses of residents around the river mouth with a depth of 30-40 centimeters.

"So residents choose to evacuate to safe places such as family homes and the Gospel Tabernacle Church which is considered safe from flooding. Residents fled because the rain was still heavy and floodwaters continued to overflow," he said.

He explained that the residents who fled to the church were generally residents who lived in the area along the Lainunjuk River.

According to him, around 30 residents of the village of Hadakamali are still staying at the Gospel Tent Church because the condition of the Lainpanjang River is still flooded even though the rainfall has started to subside.

He also added that in addition to the village of Hadakamali, floods also hit the village of Lumbu Magggit and the village of Laiunjuk which resulted in the houses of residents around the Lainpanjang River being submerged in flood water.

According to him, the floods that hit the two villages also damaged agricultural land owned by residents and washed away livestock belonging to local residents such as pigs and chickens.

The Wulla Waijelu District Government has distributed emergency response assistance for disaster-affected residents who are still taking refuge in the Gospel Tent Church in the form of food, said Markus Dakumanungu.
