SULUT - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) asked residents who live in the coastal areas of Southeast Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi to be aware of the threat of abrasion.

"We ask residents to be wary of abrasion because there are three sub-districts located in coastal areas and most of the residents' residences are in areas prone to abrasion," said Head of Southeast Minahasa BPBD Johny Kolinug in Ratahan, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, June 29.

He revealed that the three sub-districts namely Belang, Ratatotok, and Pusomaen with some of the residents' houses located in the coastal area.

"We continue to appeal to the sub-district and village governments so that the public is always aware of the presence of extreme weather," he said.

BPBD will also continue to coordinate with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), to anticipate tidal waves that have the potential for abrasion.

"The Southeast Minahasa Regency Government, especially BPBD, always coordinates with the BMKG so that they can get information regarding weather conditions at any time," he said.

Johny explained that the locations that are prone to abrasion in these three sub-districts have been constructed of breakwater levees to anticipate tidal waves.

"The previous year there had been abrasion in the coastal area of Belang District and a breakwater levee had been built. Likewise in the Pusomaen District area," he explained.

Johny said that the dam that breaks the waves or waves was built as a form of protecting the coastal area against erosion by destroying the wave energy before it reaches the beach. "So there is sediment behind the building," he said.
