AGAM - A wild and protected species of tapir (tapirus indicus) appeared in the settlement of Padang Galanggang residents, Nagari Matur Mudik, Matur District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra.

Wali Jorong Atriandi said the tapir appeared behind residents' houses about 10 to 30 meters away. "We found many tapir footprints behind the resident's house," he said in Lubukbasung, Antara, Tuesday, June 28.

He said that currently protected animals under Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems still exist in the area.

He said he was worried that local residents would find these animals when they were about to go to the garden.

He added that the tapir was suspected to have emerged from its habitat into residential areas due to pig hunting activities in the area last Sunday. With this condition, the tapir leaves its habitat and enters the residents' settlements.

Previously, these tapirs had also descended into settlements and crossed the provincial road connecting Lubukbasung Agam to Bukittinggi City.

"The tapir appears and crosses onto the provincial road. Currently it never comes out and this has just appeared," he said.
