DENPASAR - Videos showing the condition of high waves in the waters of the Bali Strait are widely shared on social media. In the video, a ferry is caught being tossed around by high waves.

Coordinator for Data and Information at the Center for Meteorology Climatology Geophysics (BMKG) Region III Denpasar, Bali, I Nyoman Gede Wiryajaya said his party estimated a wave of four meters in the southern waters of Bali.

"In the south, we predict (waves) of up to four meters," said Wiryajaya, when contacted, Friday, June 24.

The cause of the high waves in the waters of Bali is said to be related to the change of seasons. Plus the rainfall is quite high in some areas of Bali.

This condition is related to the La Nina phenomenon with weak entities and the sea surface temperature in Bali is quite warm.

"That is, if the sea surface temperature increases and it warms, it means that there is a lot of evaporation and rainfall is increasing. And now the Australian monsoon is active, meaning the wind is from east of Australia to Asia and passes us. For that reason, the wind is rather strong and the waves are high," said Wiryajaya.

His party appealed to the public to be more alert and careful of the potential for extreme weather that could occur with heavy rains.

"And for maritime and maritime (tourism) we hope to be careful, especially those who work in the marine sector, both fishermen and others keep updating information from the BMKG and appeals from the official government," he said.
