MUI Asks The Court To Prove Its Independence In Processing The Material Review Of The Job Creation Law

JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Anwar Abbas asked the Constitutional Court to prove its independence in processing the judicial review of the Job Creation Law.

"The Constitutional Court must prove that its institution is independent and that it cannot be pressured by certain parties, including the government," Anwar told reporters in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Monday, October 26.

According to him, a number of elements in society viewed the Constitutional Court as starting to have symptoms of not being independent due to the attitude of the judges. The public is now focusing on the constitutional court institution and is ready to oversee the performance of the Constitutional Court, especially regarding the case of the Job Creation Law.

The people, he said, are not blind to the law and know what is in accordance with the constitution and which is not.

"Yes, in the middle of society now the solution is only a judicial review at the Constitutional Court. But the problem is, the Court is also experiencing a crisis of trust from the public because of the attitudes and behavior of the judges," he said.

So, he reminded the Constitutional Court needs to prove that the institution is truly objective and acceptable to the community so that a sense of community justice can be fulfilled.

Asked about the demonstration that will be held by the students on October 28, Anwar said that they were exercising their constitutional rights. He asked that the action be peaceful, orderly and not anarchist.

"If the demo, do it in a civilized manner," he said.

The government, he said, should also listen to the aspirations of the protesters. The reason is, those who protested with the law were not only those who took action, but also represented some of the people who did not agree with the law.

"This country is a shared responsibility, not only the responsibility of the government and the DPR, but also the people. So we ask both the government and the DPR to listen to the wishes of the people," he said.
