JAKARTA - The Iranian government has arrested a person accused of playing a role in the shooting down of the Ukrainian plane. Iranian authorities also detained 30 people involved in a protest that has swept the country for four days since the military too late admitted their guilt.

One of the people detained by the Iranian authorities is the person who has the video of the Iranian missile shooting the Ukrainian plane, according to Reuters. The footage was uploaded by an Iranian journalist based in London.

But Iranian journalist Nariman Gharib insisted that his sources were safe. He claims that the Iranian government has arrested the wrong person.

Iranian justice spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said some of those accused of having a role in the downing of the Ukrainian plane had been arrested. However, Esmaili did not say how many were arrested or who the identities of the suspects were.

Since the Iranian government admitted to being the mastermind behind the downing of the Ukrainian plane, protests have spread across Iran. Most of the demonstrators were students, staging daily demonstrations and chanting "Scholars go!".

The demonstrators also called for Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was in power for more than 30 years to step down from the position.

Police have responded to some of the protests with too much action. A video posted on social media shows police beating demonstrators with batons, injured people and pools of blood on the streets and gunshots. Iranian police have denied firing on demonstrators and say officers are only ordered to act decisively.

Regarding the Ukrainian plane crash, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said that the five countries whose citizens were on the plane, namely Canada, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Sweden and other countries that were not named, would hold a meeting in London on Thursday 16 January to discuss further legal action.

Foreign Minister Prystaiko said the 'grieving countries' would determine what steps should be taken individually and collectively to bring the perpetrators to justice. These countries are working on how they can bring justice to families who have lost their loved ones for good. Canada, which lost 57 of its citizens, will meanwhile play a more active role in investigations into the shooting down of the plane.
