JAKARTA - Head of the Department of Politics and Social Change at CSIS, Arya Fernandes, assessed that the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB) is a strategic coalition because it was formed earlier, long before the official registration of presidential candidates was opened on October 19, 2023.

Arya explained that the KIB formed by Golkar, PPP and PAN was also considered strategic because the coalition had met the threshold requirement for nominations for presidential and vice presidential pairs of 20 percent. "If they are combined, the KIB has fulfilled 25.7 percent," he said in an online discussion entitled "The Maneuver of the Party Coalition Ahead of the Presidential Election: Motivation and Resilience" online, Wednesday, June 8.

Furthermore, another reason for strategic KIB, is because with the fulfillment of the conditions for support, there will be certainty of candidacy to be carried by this coalition. "Early coalitions are strategic because there is a lot of space, especially within parties, to discuss what policies they will push, both pre-election and post-2024," said Arya.

On that occasion, Arya also said that there was a different tendency in the 2024 presidential election from the previous contestations in the country. According to him, the difference consists of three trends.

Arya explained that the first trend is that parties will be encouraged to form coalitions earlier considering that there are many candidates who have the potential to be nominated by political parties.

Second, he continued, CSIS predicts that an important factor in influencing the future map of the coalition lies in the views of party leaders or elites. This is clearly different from the previous presidential election, where the candidate factor is important.

Third, the coalition's solidity is predicted to be dynamic, it can change depending on the results of the legislative elections. "The early coalition and its solidity will depend on the results of the legislative elections because it will also affect how the nomination map will be in the upcoming regional elections," he said.
