SURABAYA - The Mayor of Surabaya has issued a regulation prohibiting smoking in public places which will take effect on Wednesday, June 1.

The regulation is contained in the Surabaya Mayor Regulation (Perwali) Number 110 of 2021 concerning Non-Smoking Areas (KTR).

"With the issuance of this regulation, public place facilities must be free from cigarette smoke," said Eri, in Surabaya, Thursday, June 2, 2022.

The regulation not only prohibits someone from smoking, but also regulates people who smoke to be more orderly, and not to smoke anywhere. For example, smoking is prohibited in the workplace, public places, and other places. "So, smokers are not allowed to smoke in public places. Because there is already a special smoking area," he said.

In addition, Perwali Number 110 of 2021 also regulates that certain areas may not prepare special smoking areas. For example, health facilities, places for teaching and learning, children's activity arenas, places of worship, and public transportation.

However, Eri Cahyadi allows certain places to provide special smoking areas, such as open or closed spaces. Open space for example, in the form of a room that is directly related to the outside air. While the closed room must meet the requirements. Among them, separated from the main room and other rooms used for activities.

"Managers must provide a place for the disposal of cigarette residue, there must also be an air filter for the disposal of cigarette smoke. The goal is of course for health, so as not to interfere with the health of people around who do not smoke," he said.

Eri Cahyadi said that there are sanctions and fines as a deterrent effect for those who violate Perwali Number 110 of 2021. The sanctions start from written warnings, termination of activities, administrative fines, to revocation of permits.

Sanctions can be imposed on individuals or institutions, such as fines that are charged according to the level of business. For example, fines for micro businesses are IDR 500 thousand, small businesses are IDR 1 million, medium businesses are IDR 5 million, and large businesses are IDR 15 million.

For personal sanctions, three sanctions can be imposed, namely, verbal warnings, administrative fines, and social work. The administrative fine imposed is IDR 250 thousand.

"Although there are sanctions and fines, we want to be more humanitarian in order to grow awareness, and be more orderly not to smoke in any place," he said.
