Dozens Of Beef Markets In Bantul Closed Due To The Closure Of The Animal Market

BANTUL - Dozens of stalls for fresh beef at the traditional market of Bantul, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, have closed following the closure of the animal market in Gunungkidul Regency due to the discovery of dozens of farm animals infected with Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Head of the Bantul Agriculture and Food Security Agency, Joko Waluyo, said that the closing of dozens of meat stalls at the traditional market was because the cattle traders did not get meat supplies. After all, there was no slaughter of livestock from the butchers in Bantul.

"The butchers who boycotted have not slaughtered animals for three days since yesterday (Wednesday, June 1) because of the closure of the animal market in Gunungkidul, because frankly, most of the livestock slaughtered in Bantul is from outside Bantul", said Joko, quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 2.

He said, not only in Gunung Kidul where the animal market was closed but at the Magelang animal market in Central Java, the Klaten animal market, which is a supplier of livestock to Bantul, was also closed due to the findings of the FMD case.

"Because of this condition, they ended up not buying cows. Due to the closure of the animal market, at the Imogiri animal market in Bantul yesterday on market day, sales fell 30 percent", he said.

Monitoring the Bantul Market, dozens of meat stalls located in a row are not open or there are no traders selling.

One of the traders at the Bantul Market, Ngadilah, said that the beef traders previously agreed not to sell for three days, from Wednesday, June 1 to Friday, June 3, because traders had difficulty getting fresh meat supplies.

"It's been closed for two days, if they plan to not sell for three days until Friday, I don't know what the reason is", said the beverage vendor who sells across the meat stall.

When asked whether it was because of the FMD case on livestock, he did not know, only him because the traders did not get meat supplies from the butchers.

"As far as I know that's all because the new meat market is not good, he said later he will wait for further developments after Friday, will it open again or will it still be closed", he said.
