JAKARTA - The former chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Ahmad Syafii Maarif or familiarly called Buya Syafii, has died at the PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital.

Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Anwar Abbas, feels sorry for the loss of the 86-year-old cleric. According to him, Buya Syafii is a figure who never tire of thinking and doing for his people and nation, so many people give him the title 'Father of the Nation'.

"I think that title is very appropriate to be given to him because his days are indeed filled for the benefit of his people and nation. It can be said that he is a rare figure because he is known as a figure who is not thirsty for wealth and power," said Anwar Abbas to VOI, Friday, 27 May.

Anwar said that many figures who were close to Buya Syafii reminded anyone who wanted to meet them not to try to seduce them with money and luxury. Anwar said, Buya Syafii did not work with the lure. "Whoever tries to do it, will definitely get sprayed from him," he said.

To the knowledge of the chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Buya Syafii lives with principles, his religious teachings are very thick in coloring his attitude and personality. Therefore, said Anwar, if Buya Syafii saw something true, he would not be afraid to go against the flow.

"For him, what he thinks is right, he conveys it (correctly, ed) and if he sees something wrong, he will be criticized and straightened it out. The issue of whether people want to or not to hear his words is another matter," said Anwar.

While in the struggle, Anwar saw the figure of Buya Syafii who did not recognize the term muting or giving up. Of the many people who admired the figure of Buya Syafii, there was a very memorable lecture in front of Muhammadiyah youths, that Muhammadiyah was not only an Islamic movement, tajdid movement and da'wah movement amar maruf nahi munkar but also a science movement.

"Because knowledge is the truth, Muhammadiyah must try hard to find and explore the truth, then uphold and fight for it and use that truth in carrying out our personal and organizational activities and activities," said Anwar.

Anwar also expressed his gratitude to Buya Syafii. "Hopefully all of Buya's sins will be forgiven and all of his deeds of worship will be accepted by Allah SWT," he concluded.
