JAKARTA - China held military drills in waters near Taiwan, sending a serious warning to the United States, a spokesman for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command said Wednesday.

Eastern Theater Command troops have been patrolling waters near Taiwan and holding military exercises involving various branches of the service, She Yi said in a statement. This is a serious warning to the US for its recent activities in Taiwan, according to the statement.

"The US has stepped up efforts to 'encourage separatists in Taiwan'. "This is a futile attempt, which can only lead to a dangerous situation. And the United States will also face serious consequences," the statement said.

"Our army has decided and is able to repel foreign interference and destroy the plans of those who support the so-called independence of Taiwan," the statement continued.

Earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said the US would pay an "irresistible price" if it continued to go down the wrong path on the Taiwan issue, commenting on US President Joe Biden's recent statement that he is ready to defend Taiwan with force if attacked.

"The US continues to play puns around the 'one China' principle. But I want to remind the American side that no power in the world, not even within the US, can save the forces that advocate 'Taiwan independence' from defeat," he warned.

According to him, the US broke promises on the Taiwan issue, eroding and erasing the "one China" principle. In addition, he secretly and openly instigates and supports separatist activities aimed at Taiwan independence.

"If the US continues down the wrong path, this will not only create irreversible consequences for Sino-American relations, it will also force the US to pay a very high price in the end," he said.

According to Wang Wenbin, China has full confidence, full capabilities and is ready to resolutely curb separatist activities aimed at Taiwan's independence, resolutely resist external interference and firmly defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
