PADANG - The Kota Pariaman Resort Police Team, West Sumatra, arrested Sh, for allegedly defrauding a number of BRILink agents. The money earned is used to gamble online.

"From the suspect's confession, there were seven BRILink agents who became victims with a total loss of Rp. 8 million," said Pariaman Police Chief AKBP Abdul Azis through the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Pariaman Police AKP Muhammad Arvi, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, May 25.

He said the modus operandi of the perpetrator who was arrested in Sungai Limau on Saturday (21/5) was to ask the victim to send money to the account number given by the perpetrator.

After the money was sent, the perpetrator pretended to take the money on a motorbike but the person concerned immediately fled.

The victim was arrested by the victim in Sungai Limau after carrying out the action and was about to run away. The residents reported the incident to the local police and forwarded it to the Pariaman Police.

Even though the perpetrators had only been in action for 1 month, a number of BRILink agents from three sub-districts in Padang Pariaman claimed to be victims, namely BRILink in Sungai Garinggiang, Sungai Limau, and Batang Gasan.

"Currently, four victims have reported their losses due to the perpetrator's actions," he said.

Currently, the perpetrators are at the Pariaman Police Station to be asked for further information, while the evidence in that case includes a new motor vehicle purchased on credit before Eid and proof of remittances from the BRILink agent.

The perpetrators will be charged with Article 378 of the Criminal Code with a threat of 4 years in prison.

The police reminded BRILink agents not to send money first before receiving money from the sender so as not to become a victim of fraud.

Meanwhile, the perpetrator of the fraud, Sh, 28 years old, said he became addicted to online gambling applications a few months ago.

Even though the perpetrator, who has one child, already got the results from the online gambling, the money was used again for betting.

"I don't have any money that I give to my family. The money just runs out," he added.
