BMKG Beware Of Potential Heavy Rain In The Next Week In Indonesia

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that heavy rain will occur during the next week in various regions in Indonesia.

"In the next week period, there will be an increase in rainfall with heavy intensity which can be accompanied by lightning or strong winds," said BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto in his statement, Sunday, October 18.

Guswanto appealed to the public to remain vigilant and be careful of the impacts that could be caused by extreme weather conditions such as floods, landslides, flash floods, puddles, strong winds, fallen trees, and slippery roads.

The factor that will cause the increase in rainfall in the next week is the La Nina phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean with moderate intensity.

BMKG monitoring of ocean and atmosphere indicators shows that sea surface temperature has cooled -0.5C to -1.5C during the last 70 days, followed by the dominance of zonal flows of the eastern wind, which represents a strengthening of the trade winds.

"For Indonesia, La Nina which occurs in the early rainy season has the potential to increase the amount of rainfall in most areas and is not uniform," he said.

Another factor that increases rainfall in Indonesia is the propagation of the equatorial atmosphere waves from west to east in the form of Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Kelvin waves, or from east to west in the form of Rossby waves.

BMKG analysis, the current dynamic conditions of the atmosphere indicate MJO activity over Indonesia's territory, which is a collection of clouds with the potential for rain.

"The activities of La Nina and MJO at the same time can contribute significantly to the formation of rain clouds in Indonesian territory," said Guswanto.
